DETROIT, Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers worldwide expect electric vehicles to travel farther, require less charge time and retail for a lower price than automakers are offering, according to a new survey from Deloitte.

In fact, consumers' expectations around performance and purchase price are so divergent from the actual offerings available today, that no more than 2 to 4 percent of consumers worldwide would have their expectations met, according to the survey.

Hertz Says 'We Need More Electric Cars' After Year Of Rentals

..."We've got about 50 electric cars in our fleets now, and we could use another 2,000 to 3,000 if we could just get the vehicles."..."the customer feedback on the driving experience has been really good," Broome said, "better than we expected." The cars are quick off the line, quiet and smooth, and have all the usual accessories drivers expect to find in any rental car, like air conditioning, navigation, and a stereo system.

And that, he said, makes him suspect that electric cars may be adopted by the mainstream more quickly than hybrids have been. "Everyone gets that the operating cost [per mile] is lower" with an electric car, he said. "And they really like the driving experience--unlike early hybrids, which weren't much fun to drive."

The Holy Grail of electric vehicle technology is coming soon, according to Japanese news outlet Nikkei...This added capacity may extend the maximum driving distance per charge for compact electric vehicles to around 1,000 kilometers [621 miles] from the 200 km [124 miles] or so for existing vehicles.

...the argument says that by signing legislation to create the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in 1967, while he was governor of that state, Reagan launched the governmental body that would later mandate the sale of zero-emission vehicles--first in the late 1990s and again starting this year.

In fact, the man who would become the nation's 40th president in 1981, not to mention an icon of the conservative right, was no less than the very first chairman of CARB in 1968.
