    Default Duke University TIP Program

Has anyone had experience with this program? My 12 year old daughter received an invitation to participate in the program and was wondering the pro's/con's of the program.

    Thumbs up

Yes, my son was selected for and participated
in it. I would encourage you to let her do it.
Basically, they just go take the SAT test - it's
the same one that HS seniors take for a college
entrance test; only they are taking it at 12 yrs
    old instead of 17.

    Congratulations to your daughter!
    I'm proud for you both

Did your son participate in any of the summer programs they are offering or take advantage of any of the on-line courses? Yea, I told her she would be in the same room with the high school kids and that actually spooked her some. I told her she would be the one spooking them. I couldn't imagine sitting next to a 12 year old taking the SAT's... that would freak me out!!

My oldest did. He took his ACT's instead of SAT's (more math intensive).

We get stuff from Duke every couple of weeks now. He isn't interested in moving east, and if he were i would push him towards Wake Forest (they have a premier nanotech department, unbeknownst to many....the department head is a PTB in the industry).

Congrats...sounds like you have a smart cookie in your jar.

My 12 year old got this invitation too, I think we are going to pass on it though. Not sure why, I am sure it is a great opportunity. I'm just not sure what the benefits would be for my child. I look forward to hearing more input from those that have gone through the program.

I have a friend whose niece participated in this and scored a 1200 on the SAT. She received full scholarship offers for college from several different schools. My daughter participated and she scored close to 800. It is a good tool for researching colleges and they send you information on the processes you need to go to college.

Both of my children received the invitation when they were in junior high but we didn't go that route - we couldn't afford to! Seriously.

In my opinion, the Duke offer is a wonderful, tangible pat on the back to be recognized as one of the top academic achievers at your school. It allows your student to get the experience of the SAT so they know what to expect and feel comfortable when they are juniors. And it gives great afirmation where they do well - and lets them know where their weak areas are.

But, students will still do well without taking the test. Mine still ended up in the top 10% and still had welcomed academic scholarships waiting for them when they graduated.

    Personal call!

(Honestly, I always thought it was like those "Who's Who" books where they offer to put your academic record in a bound edition for only $59.99! And, yes.... we bought those! )

Yes, we got several of the WHO'S WHO'S books also. When the children received more in the following years, we passed on them. That was a lot of money with a growing family.

No, he got lots of mailings about different things, but didn't do anything further than taking the SAT test. It was pretty funny when I took him to Abilene to take it - all those high school kids were starting at us. It made him feel pretty special.

What I know is that Duke University is well known with regards to things like parapsychology.

Both my kids were asked to participate in this program when they were in 5th grade. I did not know anything about it, so went to the counselor. She said there could be benefits when taking sat's down the line, but she felt when a parent has to pay a fee, then that parent needs to keep that in mind. I asked how many kids were asked to participate from that elementary school. MANY kids were invited to participate. More than half the kids qualified.
