MYFOXNY.COM - A new survey claims that 27 percent of public school students aged 12 to 17 attend schools that are both gang and drug-infected. That means 5.7 million students attend schools which are both gang and drug dominated.

I wonder how big a problem this is at MISD?

I wonder how accurate the survey is. The statistic may be true but I think it can be wrong in either direction. I doubt that kids that are in to drugs and gangs would be honest about their involvement regardless of how anonymous the survey might be. On the other hand, when I was in junior high (keep in mind I have never so much as smoked a cigarette)... We had to take a mandatory survey and I remember marking down that I did all sorts of drugs just for pure enjoyment.
    What, Yeah, OK.

Honestly I am not suprised at all... When I went to school it was bad. My sister is in High School now and she tells me some stories and it seems worse now.

Well at the risk of sounding like a know it all or a gang banger myself............

Most so called gang kids in Midland are more like clicks........until they go to jail..........it is in jail that most of these kids get involved in real gang life.

Dunno about that, WTM. When I was an admin at a MISD secondary campus, we had many kid who identified with a gang to include colors, dress, and the like. We had a few "tifts" between rivals on campus. Those kids would flatout tell you that their family is such and such and so are they. It was scarey in that aspects.

Yes and those "family members" have been to prison.......most likely. Well I guess most "gangs" did really start out in prison, at least around here. And yes I guess a lot of these kids are now parents themselves. Sometimes I forget how old I am, LOL!!

Unfortunately, this did indeed prove to be true in many cases. What always got to me was the parents who really did try to keep their kids out of the gangs, but either did not realize what was happening or ignored the clues. As a parent, you have to fight for your kids, but at the same time hold them accountable for their actions and decisions. Values differ based on culture, socio-ecomomics, or other factors but we always want good for our kids.

The state makes it difficult to parent when they have their own ideas about our kids growing up and letting our kids know that at the age of 17, they can pretty much do whatever they want, and, we as parents have no say, and ONLY when there is a problem, then the state jumps in and the parents get the blame.

I did the same thing. My friends made up stuff, too. Making teenagers take an anonymous survey and expecting accurate results is an exercise in futility. We didn't take it seriously at all.
