Consumer Reports: GM's Volt 'doesn't really make a lot of sense'
David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington — Consumer Reports offered a harsh initial review of the Chevrolet Volt, questioning whether General Motors Co.'s flagship vehicle makes economic "sense."The extended-range plug-in electric vehicle is on the cover of the April issue — the influential magazine's annual survey of vehicles — but the GM vehicle comes in for criticism.

"When you are looking at purely dollars and cents, it doesn't really make a lot of sense. The Volt isn't particularly efficient as an electric vehicle and it's not particularly good as a gas vehicle either in terms of fuel economy," said David Champion, the senior director of Consumer Reports auto testing center at a meeting with reporters here. "This is going to be a tough sell to the average consumer."

The magazine said in its testing in Connecticut during a harsh winter, its Volt is getting 25 to 27 miles on electric power alone.

    281 Volt cars sold last month...lol. Each with a taxpayer-funded $7,500 subsidy.

    Chevy Volt: Still Not Selling
    8:08 AM, Aug 3, 2011 • By JONATHAN V. LAST

The July sales numbers are out and the Chevy Volt continues to electrify (get it?) the country. GM sold … 125 Volts last month!

I thought the SUV deduction expired a long time ago, hence the disappearance of the Hummer.

I don't know if a remnant of the original provision is still in place. To me, a $7500 tax credit promoting electric vehicles which are charged with domestically produced electricity makes much more sense than more wildly promoting gas hogs with our foreign oil addiction which costs us $300 billion/year. I don't recall Rush Limbaugh or other conservatiods lambasting the SUV tax break. Did you have a position on it?

    Hummer tax break gets hammered

...That blatant abuse of the intent of the tax code didn't sit well with the Taxpayers for Common Sense, the watchdog organization that first cried foul on the high-styling urban cowboys. The tax group estimated that the so-called SUV tax break cost taxpayers between $840 million and $987 million for every 1,000 vehicles sold. Worse, it was robbing the poor to feed the rich.

Yeah, I don't support either one of them.

from what i've read, It's for businesses & vehicles 6,000lbs or more.
Yes, like all tax codes, they can be abused. But....

I seriously doubt someone who buys a 6,000lbs SUV was swayed to make that purchase based on a tax deduction.
Therefore I'd like someone to point out what it has to do with the Volt sucking hard & nobody wanting to buy it.

It's listed under section 179 if anyone cares to google it.

Insight: GM's Volt - The ugly math of low sales, high costs
By Bernie Woodall and Paul Lienert and Ben Klayman
    Mon Sep 10, 2012 12:24am EDT

(Reuters) - General Motors Co sold a record number of Chevrolet Volt sedans in August — but that probably isn't a good thing for the automaker's bottom line.

Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts.

    Quit making them.

For the record, I prefer the 100% battery electric Nissan LEAF.

I would so love an alternative fuel source. Really, I would. But what we have so far has been so ineptly instituted, that I wonder if it is possible.

Seriously, I think your support of Green is admirable, but I also think your support is blinded by any green is good green, and I just dont subscribe to that notion, and I would venture to guess, the general public doesnt either.
