intent is important. Football is a risky sport. But the intent of a hit is to stop momentum, and good players know that you can't count on a hit to stop a player, you block them or you wrap them up. I've watched a lot of showboating big hits that did nothing to stop a big play. And the Saints are a good example of that, their defense wasn't stellar last year. Could that be because players were focusing on injuring their opponent for cash rather than effective blocking and coverage?
Are you suggesting all injuries from clean hits are intentional injuries? A lot of guys would have some heavy hearts if their coaches told them that after a player gets injured. There is no such thing as unintentionally hurting another player with a clean hit. If they get hurt, then they get hurt. You give them your best every single snap, regardless.
I never had a coach say, "Boys, the game of football is about injuring the opposing players, thereby giving our team an advantage."Besides, and like I said, if you see the little stickers on the high school football players helmet, that is nothing more than a "bounty". Since they can't give cash, they give public recognition (better than money, honestly). But make no mistake....every single coach in football at all levels coaches his players (and wants his players) to make each and every game extremely uncomfortable for the opposing team.
We aren't talking about rewards for good play. The players were being rewarded only if an opposing player was injured and taken our of play, and they were rewarded more if they were taken out the game.
